Mount Holly Garage Door Repair: springs, openers, tracks and new doors in Mount Holly, Burlington County, NJ.
How the parts work together
On a torsion-spring door, a cable runs from each bottom corner up to a drum on the spring shaft. On an extension-spring door, the cables run over pulleys to the springs along the tracks. Either way, the cables lift both sides of the door together, and the rollers keep the door in its tracks. If one side stops lifting, the door tilts and the rollers come out.
Why it happens in Mount Holly
Older doors have older cables, and cables fray. On extension-spring doors, worn pulleys can chew a cable or let it slip. Heavy wood doors put more load on cables and rollers than light steel ones. Tight detached garages leave little room for a car, and a bumped track bends easily. Track brackets loosen with time and the tracks spread.
Signs to look for
One side of the door is lower than the other. A cable is hanging loose or coiled on the floor. A roller has come out of the track. The door grinds, jerks or stops partway. A pulley wobbles or squeals. Spot one of these and the door is done for the day. Pull the opener's plug.
What not to do
Do not hammer rollers back into the track or try to rehang a cable yourself. The springs are still under tension, and on an extension-spring door the cables connect straight to them.
How we fix it
First the door is propped so it cannot drop. New cables go on both sides, chewed pulleys get swapped, rollers are guided home, and kinked track is trued or cut out and replaced. We snug every loose bracket and look over the springs, as a cable often fails right after a spring does.
Price
Rehanging a door that slipped its rails is $125 to $215. New cables, or a drum put right, is $170 to $350. A kinked length of rail cut out and replaced is $210 to $380. The figure is agreed before work begins.
